Announces retirement
Oberg announced his retirement from baseball Tuesday and has accepted a part-time position with the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Oberg was effective the last time we saw him pitch, but unfortunately that was back in 2019 before multiple blood clot issues sidelined him. The right-hander will retire with a career 3.85 ERA across 259 relief appearances across parts of five major-league seasons.

Oberg missed the entire 2020 season due to various injuries, and he underwent thoracic outlet surgery in September to help repair his right arm issue. If he's fully healthy, he should compete with Daniel Bard for the closer's role during spring training. The right-hander got a taste of ninth-inning duties in 2019, converting on five of his eight save chances. He posted a career-best 2.25 ERA and 26.0 K% in 2019, but his 3.90 xFIP and 4.00 SIERA were much closer to his career average. Despite his strong ERA over his past two seasons, he has a swinging-strike rate of just 12.2%, and his average fastball velocity has dropped over the past two years to 94.4 mph. While Oberg relies heavily on his slider, it's safe to wonder where his velocity will be following his surgery. His fantasy value will prop up if he's the closer on Opening Day, but Oberg carries several question marks heading into his age-31 season.

May be headed for retirement
Oberg (forearm) acknowledged in an interview this week with Jack Etkin of Rockies Magazine that he's not actively preparing for a return to baseball. "I'm not really in a rush to pick up a ball again in the near term and give it another go," Oberg said. "Just in the sense that [I] keep running into the risk of having to go through all of this again. Now it's not really my decision, I don't feel at this point, really."

Inching closer to retirement?
Oberg is aiming toward retirement after saying he's "not really in a rush to pick up a ball again in the near term," according to Jack Etkin of Rockies Magazine.
ANALYSIS
Oberg hasn't pitched since the 2019 season, and while the veteran reliever hasn't officially confirmed his retirement, all signs point toward that being the most likely scenario. "I'm not really in a rush to pick up a ball again in the near term and give it another go, just in the sense that I keep running into the risk of having to go through all of this again," Oberg said, referring to the recurring blood-clotting issues that have kept him off the field. Oberg has undergone four different procedures to address the blood clots in his right forearm between Aug. 2016 and March 2021, and it looks as though the issue has ended his big-league career.
