Closer Watch

Tigers - Octavio Dotel picked up the save after Jose Valverde made a mess in a non-save situation Tuesday and left with a lower back injury. Keep in mind that Joaquin Benoit had already pitched, so Dotel isn't necessarily the closer-in-waiting for the Tigers as manager Jim Leyland could consider a committee with the lefty-righty combo if Valverde misses any time.

Cards - Jason Motte served up a solo homer to Alfonso Soriano on Tuesday afternoon, but backed into a win by finishing the frame and getting a run from the St. Louis offense in the bottom of the inning.

Cubs - Rafael Dolis was knocked around and gave up the game-winning run in a non-save situation Tuesday. For now, he remains the Cubs' closer, but there's reason to believe that the job could change hands again if Dolis proves to be an unrealiable option in the ninth inning.

Astros - Brett Myers gave up walk-off home run to Hunter Pence in a non-save situation Tuesday afternoon. By all indications, his job is very save as his move to the bullpen has been an overall success to this point in the season. Interestingly enough, potential closer-in-waiting David Carpenter was optioned to Triple-A on Tuesday to make room for starter Jordan Lyles.

Recommended Pickup

Anthony Bass, SP, SD - Bass delivered another strong outing against the Nats on Tuesday afternoon, earning his second win of the season and improving his K:BB to 45:15 in 46 innings for the season. Although he's long gone in many deeper formats, Bass has a favorable upcoming schedule and should be considered at least in the short term for shallow mixed formats. He'll face the Angels at Petco Park in his next start Sunday, while getting the Mets at Citi Field after missing the Cardinals on the road early next week.

Other Recent Recommendations: Jordan Lyles, Kyle Seager, Josh Reddick and Addison Reed.
