Closer Watch

Detroit Tigers – With general manager Dave Dombroski saying Joakim Soria is just days away from returning, the saves situation in Detroit would seem to be heating up. Unfortunately for Soria owners, Nathan has actually righted the ship of late, recording six saves and a 2.89 ERA in the last 30 days. A nasty 1.61 WHIP this season will prevent Nathan from ever feeling safe in his position for the rest of 2014, but his recent performances will likely stave off Soria as the Tigers continue to march toward the postseason. The two veteran pitchers will hold down the eighth and nine innings for better or worse, relegating the newly-acquired Jim Johnson to sparodic use whenever needed.

Recommended Pickup

Oswaldo Arcia, OF, MIN – To say the entire Minnesota Twins lineup is on fire of late is not doing justice to what the team has done. In the first two games of their series with Detroit, the Twins scored 32 runs. Largely due to the fact they are more than 10 games below .500 and did not factor into the postseason discussion past April, the bats in Minneapolis are drawing less attention than they should be. In the heart of that order is Arcia, who languished for most of the season trying to stay above the Mendoza line. At the start of August, however, something clicked for the 23-year-old, who is suddenly hitting .281 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs this month. With plenty of punch in front and behind Arcia, the streaky slugger could continue this pace for a little while longer. While others shy away from the Twins' outfielder as an option to fill a spot left vacant by an injured star, take the plunge on Arcia and ride the hot streak for as long as it lasts.
