Closer Watch

Detroit Tigers – Saturday was essentially the worst-case scenario for the Tigers' bullpen. Joe Nathan blew his sixth save of the season Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, giving up a run on two hits and two walks while recording just one to ruin an outstanding eight-inning effort by Max Scherzer. Joakim Soria finished the ninth inning for Nathan and went out for the 10th, but called for the trainers during his warmup pitches and exited the game, appearing to clutch his lower back. Joba Chamberlain completed the meltdown by folding in the 10th to take the loss. Given the tumult Nathan has experienced this season, Soria could have been zoning in on the closer role, but depending on the severity of his injury, a stint on the disabled list could be just as likely at this point. Meanwhile, manager Brad Ausmus still has to tend to the immediate problem at hand, as the Tigers are the odds-on favorites to win the AL pennant, but cannot even seem to shake the Kansas City Royals for their division crown with the bullpen in its current state. Nathan may still be removed from the closer's role, but stay posted on Soria's status in the coming days, as he still represents the best end-game pitcher on the roster.

Recommended Pickup

Derek Jeter, SS, NYY – As the good-bye tour enters the fourth and final quarter, the Yankees are playing some of their best baseball of the season. One reason for the resurgence is that Jeter has been sneaky good lately, hitting close to .300 over the course of the last month. The numbers may not inspire awe, but based on the list of shortstops currently available in most formats, the future Hall of Famer is worth a look at the very least. Jeter passed Honus Wagner on Saturday for sixth place on the all-time hits list, legging out an infield single. His base hits lately have not been of the overly impressive variety, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While his skills are not what they used to be, his historic single Saturday and the infield hit that preceded it Friday remind fantasy owners that he still possesses an above-average hit tool and can run a bit. With only eight stolen bases this season, he is unlikely to steal bases in bunches, but those struggling to deal with the loss of Troy Tulowitzki or Hanley Ramirez – to injuries that have further diminished an already thin supply of shortstops – can do much worse than adding Jeter to their rosters.
