Closer Watch

Giants:Sergio Romo pitched back-to-back nights on Tuesday and Wednesday and had his fifth blown save of the season Wednesday against the Mets. He was expected to be unavailable Thursday and he did not get the save chance in the ninth inning. The Giants used a combination of Santiago Casilla and Javier Lopez to finish the game in the ninth with the latter earning his first save of the season. While Lopez has put together a solid season in his own right, Romo is in no danger of losing his closing duties in the final weeks of the season. He has 35 saves this season, which is currently fifth-best in the National League.

Ubaldo Jimenez, SP, CLE - A reported mechanical fix in the pitching motion for Jimenez has turned him into a lethal weapon again on the mound. Over his last seven starts, he has a 4-2 record with a 1.53 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 47.0 innings. He has been showing improved movement and location on his fastball and his slider is as nasty as ever. He has struck out 10 hitters in three of his last seven starts and has been cutting down on the walks that have caused him trouble as well. Even though he most likely only has one more regular season start this year, it is a great one at that on Wednesday at home against a struggling White Sox team. In two starts this season against the southside Chicago team, he is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 13.1 innings. The team's free-swinging tendencies, along with his new-found motion, are a formula for success this week.
