Match Preview

Portugal and Serbia face off in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier at the Estadio da Luz on Monday. The home side are the defending champions, as they secured their maiden international trophy in the tournament's previous edition; therefore, the expectations of everyone associated with the team have increased.

Portugal's start to the qualification campaign was hardly impressive, as they finished their opener against Ukraine in a 0-0 draw, and they come in with just five wins in their last 14 matches in all competitions.

On the other hand, Serbia will be playing their first match in the qualification process and will be eyeing a positive start to help them qualify for the group stage. The Orlovi have not qualified for the mega event since 2000, which means there will be a lot of pressure on this set of players to achieve something remarkable. However, Mladen Krstajic's men will be relatively confident going into the match, with four wins and no defeats in their last seven matches.

This will be fifth time these teams face off, with Portugal winning two and Serbia one.

Predicted Lineups

Portugal: Rui Patricio, Joao Cancelo, Pepe, Ruben Dias, Raphael Guerreiro, Joao Moutinho, William Carvalho, Ruben Neves, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andre Silva, Bernardo Silva

Serbia: Predrag Rajković, Antonio Rukavina, Stefan Mitrović, Nikola Milenković, Miloš Veljković, Dušan Tadić, Adem Ljajić, Andrija Živković, Mijat Gaćinović, Sergej Milinković-Savić, Aleksandar Mitrović

Combined XI

Players to Watch

Ruben Dias (D): Portugal's Ruben Dias is one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs

Players to Watch

Ruben Dias (D): Portugal's Ruben Dias is one of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in Europe. The 21-year-old plays for Portuguese club Benfica and is having an outstanding season, averaging 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per match. With Pepe and Jose Fonte coming to the end of their respective careers, Portugal will be depending on Dias to become a permanent figure in the defensive line.

Bernardo Silva (M): Portugal's Bernardo Silva is one of the most talented players in squad, and he comes in with five goals and six assists in 25 league appearances for Manchester City in the English Premier League. Silva's movement off the ball makes him a real threat in the opposition's half, and Serbia will have to find a way to not only stop Cristiano Ronaldo, but he also Silva.

Aleksandar Mitrović (F): Serbia's Aleksandar Mitrović is one of those players who shines a lot more for his country than his club. The 24-year-old has an outstanding record for Serbia, with 23 goals in just 46 appearances. At the club level this season, Mitrović is the star player in a Fulham side who are nearing an exit from the Premier League, and he has 10 goals and two assists in 31 games.

Captain pick: Cristiano Ronaldo

Vice-captain pick: Aleksandar Mitrović
