Draws Nick Diaz overseas
Luque will take on Nick Diaz in a welterweight matchup at UFC Abu Dhabi on August 3, UFC President Dana White announced via X on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Luque has hit a rough patch of late, dropping three of four fights, albeit all against strong competition. After falling to Joaquin Buckley in March, Luque may still be on the edge of the welterweight rankings, but the UFC recognized he needs a get-right spot. That will come this August, as Luque will face a massive name in Diaz on a globally-recognized card. Luque also happens to be eight years younger than Diaz, who is winless since 2011 and hasn't competed since 2021. There's no doubt the UFC is giving Diaz a massive pay-day to get featured in Abu Dhabi, but expect him to serve primarily as a punching bag for Luque, who will be heavily favored.

No-shows Atlantic City loss
Luque lost to Joaquin Buckley via TKO (punches) at 3:17 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Atlantic City.
ANALYSIS
Luque's performance was so bad that it makes you wonder if he was hurt and/or sick. There's literally nothing positive to say about his effort. He was able to generate nothing on the feet and failed on all three of his takedown attempts. The finish came when Luque shot on his opponent, tried to pull guard and ended up getting stacked by Buckley and pounded out. The 32-year-old looked great in his most recent bout against Rafael dos Anjos last August, but he's now lost three of his last four fights dating back to April 2022 and is just about out of time in terms of making an impact in the rankings.

Given new opponent
Luque is scheduled to compete against Joaquin Buckley in a welterweight fight at UFC Atlantic City on March 30, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Luque will fight at UFC Atlantic City, but it will be Buckley instead of Sean Brady. Going from Brady to Buckley does not favor Luque's chances of significantly going up the UFC welterweight rankings, as he is now fighting someone unranked rather than a top-seven contender. But by defeating a more inconsistent welterweight in Buckley, Luque could perhaps earn a better fight down the line, but only if he pulls off another win.

Not taking on Brady
Luque is not fighting Sean Brady at UFC Atlantic City, according to MMAJunkie.com.
ANALYSIS
UFC CEO Dana White may have announced a Brady-Luque fight, but the supposed bout's participants never signed a bout agreement because the former kept dealing with an undisclosed injury, which will keep him out for a while. Once expected to be main eventing UFC Atlantic City, it is unclear if that will continue being the case or he gets pushed off the card entirely. There is still a reasonable amount of time though, around two months, for the UFC to find a new for Luque.
