Smolka lost to Davey Grant via TKO (strikes) at 0:49 of Round 3 at UFC on ESPN 36 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Smolka made this a good, competitive fight, which was no easy task considering he not only entered as a +225 underdog, but was dominated by Grant in Round 1. Smolka was able to completely flip the script in Round 2, beating Grant to the punch and threatening a submission late in the frame. Unfortunately for Louis, he did a terrible job of defending Grant's vicious leg kicks. One particularly brutal one in the early stages of Round 3 forced a pained Smolka to the mat and some additional strikes led to referee Mike Beltran smartly stepping in. Smolka, set to turn 31 years of age this coming July, has had two separate stints with the UFC. It hasn't gone well of late, as he has lost three of four dating back to May 2020.

Draws Grant in mid-May
BantamweightUFC
May 1, 2022
Smolka will take on Davey Grant in a bantamweight matchup at the UFC event scheduled for May 14, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Smolka returned from nearly a one-year layoff last December only to be finished in the first round by Vince Morales. He takes on a fighter in Grant who lost twice in 2021 but had previously been on a three-fight winning streak. The two matchup up eerily similar, statistically, in both offensive striking and grappling, but Smolka struggles much more in defending the takedown. Smolka is the far more likely fighter to throw up submissions, however, averaging 1.9 attempts per 15 minutes of fight time.
Falls early in Saturday's opening fight
BantamweightUFC
December 6, 2021
Smolka lost to Vince Morales via KO (punches) at 2:02 of Round 1 at UFC Vegas 44 on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Smolka managed to land 23 significant strikes of his own before getting caught, but it was still a sub-par performance from the (-165) betting favorite. He managed to land a couple successful knees to the body of Morales, but was caught with a big overhand right on the break that sent him to the canvas and was his ultimate undoing. Smolka has now alternated wins and losses in his last five fights, which won't do much for the 30-year-old in terms of gaining momentum in the division.
Vince Morales on tap
BantamweightUFC
October 6, 2021
Smolka (undisclosed) will fight Vince Morales in a bantamweight bout at UFC's Dec. 4 event, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Smolka was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout with Sean O'Malley in July due to an injury, so he hasn't been in the Octagon since beating Jose Quinonez via TKO in December 2020. Morales is coming off a win via unanimous decision over Drako Rodriguez in August after losing his previous two fights.

BantamweightUFC
June 29, 2021
Smolka is out of his fight at UFC 264 against Sean O'Malley with an undisclosed injury, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani reports.
ANALYSIS
Smolka and O'Malley were scheduled to be on the PPV main card. The UFC is trying to find a replacement fighter for O'Malley for the bout next weekend. Smolka is just 3-6 over his last nine fights and it's unclear how long this injury will keep him out for.
Taking on O'Mally in July
BantamweightUFC
May 3, 2021
Smolka will take on Sean O'Malley in a bantamweight bout at the UFC event on July 10, Ryan Frederick of WrestlingObserver.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Smolka got the win in his last fight against Jose Quinonez by TKO after missing weight by three pounds. Prior to that Smolka had lost six of his last eight fights. He will take on O'Malley in July who is sitting 13-1 for his career.
