Drops to 0-4 in UFC
BantamweightUFC
August 12, 2023
Buys lost to Marcus McGhee via KO (punch) at 2:19 of Round 1 at UFC on ESPN 51 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
A loser of each of his first three UFC bouts, the company awarded Buys a fourth opportunity here and wasn't rewarded for its generosity. He had zero answers for the massive power and speed edge possessed by McGhee. Buys ate a few big shots early on before a stinging right hand finished him off on the spot. The 27-year-old South African earned his UFC opportunity with a submission win on Dana White's Contender Series in late 2020, but it's been all downhill since.

Still searching for first UFC win
BantamweightUFC
June 26, 2022
Buys lost to Cody Durden via TKO (punches) at 1:08 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Buys earned his UFC opportunity with a submission victory on Dana White's Contender Series in November 2020, but he dropped each of his first two official bouts with the company since. Then this happened. Buys was crushed by Durden moments after the opening bell rang and found himself on the mat eating a ton of unanswered strikes. Buys was clearly finished, but referee Mark Smith forced him to absorb countless additional shots before finally pulling the plug. It was a truly disastrous effort in a fight in which Buys somehow entered as a very slight (-120) favorite. It would appear to be highly unlikely Buys gets a fourth chance with the company considering what we have seen in his first three attempts.
Durden up next June 18

April 12, 2022
Buys is set to take on Cody Durden in a bantamweight matchup at a UFC event June 18, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Buys is looking for his first UFC victory June 18 against Durden. Buys won his previous five consecutive fights leading up to his UFC career, though hasn't found success thus far. The South African fighter stands two inches shorter than Durden, though shares the same reach (67.0 inches).
Routed by Montel Jackson
BantamweightUFC
September 18, 2021
Buys lost to Montel Jackson via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Stepping in on short notice for Danaa Batgerel who was forced to withdraw due to visa issues, Buys hung around for about a round before the roof caved in. He actually had Jackson in trouble a couple times in the first frame with a pair of deep submission attempts, but Jackson managed to hang on, and Buys was dominated on the feet the rest of the way. Buys showed his toughness in seeing the final bell -- no small feat considering he was knocked down on four separate occasions throughout the course of the bout. Buys has now been dominated in each of his first two UFC bouts and likely needs a win his next time out in order to save his job.
Steps in to face Jackson
BantamweightUFC
August 25, 2021
Buys will move up to bantamweight to take on Montel Jackson at the UFC event scheduled for Sept. 18, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Buys will step in on relatively short notice to take the place of Danaa Batgerel, who was forced to withdraw from the fight due to visa issues. Buys earned his opportunity with the company after a submission victory on Dana White's Contender Series, but proceeded to lose his debut to Bruno Silva via second-round knockout in March. His striking defense was atrocious in that matchup, as he was knocked down three times by Silva before eventually getting finished. Jackson is no easy task, as he's won four of his last five fights with two first-round stoppages.
