Williams lost to Mickey Gall via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:57 of Round 1 at UFC on ESPN 27 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Williams started the fight by landing a clean shot and pressing forward, but likely never fully recovered from a hard elbow in the clinch that rung his bell. Another clean shot as the pair returned to their feet forced Williams to take a desperation shot, which allowed Gall to reverse position and lock in the choke. "Bomaye" got his UFC contract off an impressive knockout in his second Contender Series bout, but hasn't looked particularly impressive in either of his two fights in the Octagon, which makes one wonder how long he will hang around in the organization. Williams falls to 9-5 with one no-contest in professional MMA as a result of the loss.

Williams found out from his post-fight injury report that he entered the bout with a crack in his C-3 vertebrae. He also suffered a broken nose and orbital during his unanimous decision (27-29, 27-29, 28-290 defeat to Nassourdine Imavov on Saturday night, Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie reports.

Williams apparently suffered the back injury in his previous fight against Gregory Rodrigues at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series back on Sept. 15. The 29-year-old also absorbed two questionable headbutts from Imavov during their five-round scuffle which resulted in a broken nose. Williams and Imavov were both dazed (and cut open) by an accidental clash of heads early in the fight, and Williams was taken down shortly after that exchange. He was able to get back to his feet, and after a few exciting striking exchanges, took a massive knee to the groin that left him out of commission for several minutes. Upon the restart, Williams landed a big left hand, along with several short shots to the head while Imavov looked for a takedown. Williams eventually succumbed to Imavov's wrestling and was taken down a second time, but again was able to spring back up. The final minute was spent fighting off a tight guillotine attempt. For a moment it looked like it was over, but Williams rolled out and threatened with his own takedown in the round's last moments. Both fighters shot for takedowns unsuccessfully in Round 2, and after a few more wild striking exchanges, Williams started to appear visibly tired and got a bit sloppy on the feet. Imavov used this to his advantage and got the fight back to the mat, threatening with another submission and landing some heavy ground-and-pound. Williams was running on fumes entering the third round, and it didn't help that his eye seemed to get the worst of another accidental headbutt. Imavov really started to put it together with his striking after that, and it was a miracle that Williams was somehow able to stay on his feet.
