Matthews secured a UFC contract after defeating Jair Farias in a Contender Series bout in October. Matthews' opponent has lost two straight fights since joining the UFC, giving the 31-year-old a good chance at starting off strong.

Matthews defeated Jair Farias via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of five fighters to be awarded an official UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
Matthews looked great for the first nine minutes of the bout, walking down his opponent and peppering him with jabs, while also firing head kicks and wrestling to mix things up. The forward pressure seemed to operate on diminishing returns, however, as it resulted in "The Controller" getting tagged and losing steam in Round 3. Nevertheless, Matthews has a nice compliment of skills and is big for the weight class. If he can refine a few things, he could be someone to take seriously in the featherweight division.
