Battling post-surgery knee infection
Martin said Monday that he's currently hospitalized after he developed an infection after undergoing a routine knee scope procedure in early July to address a torn meniscus, Mike Bohn of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Martin required surgery after sustaining the torn meniscus in his unanimous decision loss to Neil Magny at UFC 250 on June 6. The 30-year-old expected to resume training two weeks post-surgery, but with the pain still lingering in his knee, Martin checked himself back into the hospital and required another procedure to address the infection. Martin said doctors have prescribed him antibiotics and will continue to monitor his symptoms, but there's no current timeline for him to resume training, much less commit to his next fight.

Martin lost to Neil Magny via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC 250 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
The decision itself wasn't horrendous, but the 30-27 scorecards in favor of Magny were. Martin, at a minimum, deserved to drop a split decision. He won Round 1 going away and looked fairly strong through most of Round 2. His gas tank had hit empty by the time Round 3 began, but he put together enough good work over the course of the first ten minutes to at least give himself a chance. Martin was particularly effective in the clinch. He used his upper-body strength to repeatedly control position along the fence and limit Magny's space. This is another prime example as to why any fight that sees the final bell is a toss-up. The scoring of judges on a night-by-night basis is entirely too unpredictable. Martin has alternated wins and losses in his past four bouts.

Meanwhile, Magny returned from year-plus hiatus in March and defeated Li Jingliang via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

He responded with a strong effort and resounding victory. Martin's takedown defense looked exceptional in stuffing all nine of Emeev's tries. Offensively, Martin looked like the more comfortable of the two men en route to the unanimous decision win. Dating back to April 2018, Martin is now sporting a 5-1 record with his only loss in that span coming against Maia. Martin probably isn't a top-10 guy at 170 pounds and the distinct lack of power (one career win via KO) in his hands is a major issue moving forward, but Martin has looked excellent since his move to American Top Team and he's clearly on the upswing.
