A reliable defensive forward, Pelley's role in New Jersey will remain that of a checking forward for the approaching season. The Devils have a handful of young skaters to whom they want to give more ice time, so Pelley could see his playing time dwindle. Worst of all, he won't have much of an offensive impact, as he recorded just 10 points in each of the past two seasons. And though it doesn't help fantasy owners that much, Pelley is important to the team's defensive philosophy.
Pelley was given a full-time role after some solid showings as a stop-gap call-up the last several seasons, but fell in and out of favor with coach Jacques Lemaire while also missing games due to injury. Pelley's slated to be the team's top defensive forward and won't see much power play time or offensive minutes. He'll have plenty of ice time, but most of it will be directed toward stopping the opposition.
Pelley is a grinding, defensive center the team is relying on to help replace John Madden. Pelley won't do a ton offensively and should only be considered in the deepest of leagues.
Pelley established himself nicely as a defensive forward in his first full season, however, his role is purely defensive.
