Dwyer has been hired as an assistant coach for AHL Charlotte.
ANALYSIS
Dwyer spent the entirety of his seven-year NHL career with Carolina, so it makes sense for him to return to the organization as a coach now that he's officially hung up his skates after playing overseas for two seasons. The 2002 fourth-round pick will retire having totaled 42 goals and 93 points in 416 career NHL appearances.

At one point in time, Dwyer was a decent scorer in the minor leagues, having recorded at least 40 points in three of the four full seasons he played in the AHL, but that success has since not translated to the NHL level. Last season -- his sixth with Carolina -- he scored just 22 points in 75 games, and has never scored more than eight goals in a single season. Dwyer averaged roughly 15 minutes in ice time last season playing on the Canes’ third line with Riley Nash and Nathan Gerbe, although he was used briefly on the second line alongside Jordan Staal at one point. Overall, Dwyer is carving out a role for himself as a checking-line winger and will probably never develop into the top-six scorer the ‘Canes envisioned he would be back in the minors. Those in deeper formats can feel free to draft him based on his 25-point potential, but there’s little upside beyond that.
Last season, Dwyer averaged over 15 minutes of ice time per game in a checking line role. His minus-7 rating is what you'd expect from an energy line player. However, he also proved he can chip in some secondary scoring with 16 points (8G, 8A) in just 46 games -- the best points-per-game output of his career. Unfortunately, all this adds up to not a whole lot of fantasy value in most standard formats. For those of you in ultra-deep leagues, give him a look in the later rounds.
Listed at 5-foot-11, 175-pounds, Dwyer is a bit small for an NHL forward but he counters with speed and physical play on the third and fourth lines. Though his role is primarily that of a penalty killer, Dwyer has shown steady improvement on the offensive end since joining the Hurricanes organization in 2006. The Carolina club was able to secure his services with a two-year, $1.25 million deal this past June.
Dwyer averaged far more ice time last season (12:30), than in his rookie year: (8:33). Unfortunately, the vast majority of fantasy owners haven't taken the bait on his services. Will he mature and become an important member of the Hurricanes someday? Yes, we have a feeling that he will, but there are plenty of young skaters on his own team - namely Brandon Sutter and Zach Boychuk - that can easily trump anything that Dwyer brings to the table, making him a reach, even in deep fantasy leagues.
Dwyer, a standout from Western Michigan, agreed to a two-way contract with the Hurricanes this past offseason. It’s early in his career, so expect him to get work in both the NHL and Albany of the AHL.
Despite a couple of callups for depth after injuries on the Carolina roster, Dwyer never got a chance to show himself. That will probably happen again in 2008-09; it's unlikely that Dwyer will make much noise beyond the AHL level.
Dwyer would have to climb over a whole lot of warm bodies to get a crack at any significant ice time in Raleigh this season.
Not to be confused with Gordie Dwyer, Pat has a prospect of some playing time with the Hurricanes, albeit probably not for a year or so. At 5-11, 160, he needs to fill out considerably if he's to endure the banging at the NHL level.
