Goldobin was released by CSKA Moscow on Monday.
ANALYSIS
In 21 games this season, Goldobin registered four goals and seven helpers for CSKA. After spending the past season primarily in the AHL, Goldobin inked a two-year deal with the KHL club but it seems has worn out his welcome. It's not immediately clear if the 25-year-old winger will rejoin the Canucks organization, yet the timing would suggest he is preparing to attend training camp.

Goldobin finished 2018-19 with 27 points in 63 games, including nine on the power play, where he averaged 2:33 of ice time. The 23-year-old is an offensive dynamo but sports a minus-24 rating over his past two NHL campaigns, something that has limited his ice time and hurt his fantasy value. If he is able to carve out an everyday role with the Canucks this season, Goldobin carries undeniable fantasy potential. Whether he can actually pull that off is another story. His performance at Canucks training camp will be worth keeping a close eye on.
Based on talent, Goldobin should be the Canucks' leading candidate to fill the top left-wing spot vacated by Daniel Sedin. Goldobin showed occasional flashes of elite skill with 14 points in 38 games, but his lack of focus in other areas saw him finish with a minus-14 rating and averaging under 13 minutes a game. The Canucks want Goldobin to be better on defense, and if he can't be trusted at both ends of the ice, he'll find himself getting limited ice time and draw in and out of the lineup once again. Among the Canucks' stockpile of young wingers, Goldobin is intriguing because of his high ceiling, but that upside comes with plenty of risk for fantasy owners.
Goldobin, a promising winger, was pried away from the Sharks in the Jannik Hansen deal shortly ahead of the trade deadline last February. San Jose's first-round (27th overall) 2014 draft selected made 12 appearances for the Canucks, affording the Russian the chance to flash his sniping ability on the big stage (he ended up with three goals on only 10 shots). With Goldobin having two years remaining on a two-way contract, Vancouver can shuffle the crafty prospect between the organizational ranks without exposing him to waivers. Of course, even if he impresses in training camp and cracks the Opening Night roster, Goldobin would be hard-pressed to leap over Markus Granlund or Sven Baertschi on the depth chart. It's best to let this supposed gem gain more experience before investing in him outside of keeper/dynasty leagues.
