Nick Seeler

Nick Seeler

31-Year-Old DefensemanD
Philadelphia Flyers
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Seeler is a third-pairing defenseman who earns his paychecks by being defensively capable and playing with a physical edge. He finished the 2023-24 campaign with a goal, 13 points, a plus-9 rating, 78 PIM, 205 blocked shots and 132 hits in 71 outings with the Flyers. The 31-year-old set personal bests last season in PIM and blocks, but that's because he also averaged a career-high 16:57 of ice time. However, part of the reason why the Flyers leaned on him was because Rasmus Ristolainen (triceps) and Ryan Ellis (back) missed a ton of the 2023-24 campaign. If they're healthy next season, then Seeler might find himself used a bit more sparingly, which would in turn hurt his production. The Minnesota native is still likely to be a great source of PIM, blocks and hits, but perhaps not at quite the same levels as he reached in 2023-24. Read Past Outlooks

Seeler notched an assist, four blocked shots and two PIM in Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Seeler has been an occasional contributor on offense while adding defensive production in a bottom-four role. He's earned two assists over his last five outings and has four points through 10 contests overall. The defenseman also has 13 hits, 24 blocked shots and four PIM while averaging 17:00 of ice time per game, right in line with where he was at in 2023-24.

A stay-at-home defender that offers next to nothing offensively, Seeler was a regular for the going-nowhere Flyers last season, appearing in 77 of 82 games and managing a career-high four goals and 14 points. Seeler's 126 hits and 161 blocked shots were nice to see, but you can do better late in your draft even if you need help in those categories. The 30-year-old Minnesota native should again occupy a third-pairing role for Philadelphia before hitting unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2024.
Seeler only got into 12 NHL games last year, managing just one assist between the Wild and the Blackhawks. At 27 years old, Seeler is likely more of a depth option than a steady presence in any lineup, and that's likely the role he'll serve with the Blackhawks. He may occasionally do well enough to bump Calvin de Haan or Brent Seabrook from the top six, but it's highly unlikely Seeler makes much of a scoring impact even when he's playing. His role will almost exclusively be limited to shutdown duties on the third pairing.
The Minnesota native got his first full taste of the NHL last year, posting two goals and seven points while suiting up in 71 games. Seeler was more of a physical presence on the ice last season, blocking 116 shots and dishing out 78 hits. That offers a glimpse at the 25-year-old's skill set -- while he doesn't provide much offense, he plays a physical game and uses his solid 6-foot-2 frame to cut down time and space for opposing forwards. Expect the 26-year-old's days in the AHL to be over, but his main contributions from a fantasy perspective will come in defensive categories, not on the scoresheet.
Seeler got his first crack at the NHL last year, posting a strong plus-10 rating in 22 games but only chipping in four assists. That offers a glimpse at the 25-year-old's skill set, as while he doesn't provide much offense he plays a physical game and uses his solid 6-foot-2 frame to clear the crease and make life difficult for attackers. The Wild signed him to a three-year, one-way deal in the offseason, so his AHL days may be over, but his main contributions for Minnesota will come in PIM, hits and blocked shots, not in points.
