Matsumoto spent all of last season in the AHL, where he recorded 15 goals and 18 assists in 65 games with the Worcester Sharks and the Chicago Wolves. He's made a few NHL appearances over his career, but there's no indication that he'll have any kind of substantial impact for fantasy owners this year.
A former third-round draft pick by the Flyers, Matsumoto received his first call-up to the Hurricanes last season after playing the previous three campaigns exclusively in the AHL. He only tallied two points in the 13 NHL games a year ago, but he's an intriguing scoring talent who just needs more experience at hockey's highest level of competition.
The Hurricanes acquired Matsumoto from the Flyers during the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. With so much depth at the center position, Philadelphia had no room for this prospect. Still, the Flyers' loss could be the team from Raleigh's gain regarding Matsumoto. The Hurricanes inked the gritty forward to a two-year, two-way deal in the offseason, presumably with the hopes that he will continue to develop as an aggressive, high-scoring forward in the years to come.
