Cowan got to skate with his boyhood idol, Mitch Marner, and Max Domi against Montreal on Thursday.

ANALYSIS
Cowan didn't hit the scoresheet but did impress. The trio created eight scoring chances and controlled 84.4 percent of the expected goals at 5v5. But in reality, games aren't decided based on expected goals. Cowan hasn't picked up a point during the preseason. The diminutive 19-year-old must work on his strength -- he got pushed off the puck a few times, and he had the puck stripped a few times by average NHL defenders. But that will come. Cowan needs more development time, but he sure is fun to watch.

Cowan was selected by the Maple Leafs with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old has 12 goals, 39 points and 35 PIM in 23 contests with OHL London this season. The Maple Leafs are in win-now mode and would likely be open to trading prospects for immediate help, but it seems there are limits to how much of their future they're willing to sacrifice.
