Simon produced seven goals, 22 points and 102 shots in 64 contests with the Penguins last season. He suffered a shoulder injury which required surgery in March, but it's likely the Czech winger will be able to suit up for training camp. Away from the deep scoring talent of Pittsburgh, Simon will likely take a step back offensively in 2020-21. He's a long shot to break the 20-point mark as a bottom-six forward. Fantasy managers in deeper formats may appreciate Simon's versatility as either a center or a winger, but his overall impact is likely to be limited.
There are few players on the Penguins roster that will have more on the line during training camp than Simon and teammate Zach Aston-Reese, as the two will likely be battling for the same spot in the lineup following the offseason acquisitions of Dominik Kahun and Brandon Tanev. The 24-year-old Simon's willingness to battle for pucks along the boards could give him an edge over Aston-Reese, but even if he's able to secure a roster spot out of training camp, he'll likely be a healthy scratch on a semi-regular basis throughout the campaign. In other words, Simon will be hard pressed to improve upon the eight goals and 28 points he put up in 71 games last season in 2019-20.
Simon's grip on a lineup spot with the Penguins should be considered tenuous at best, but heading into camp he figures to be ahead of Jean-Sebastien Dea, Zach Aston-Reese and Derek Grant. It would take a very solid season from the versatile winger to avoid spending some time in the press box or even in the minors, though any demotion would likely be temporary. Thus far, the Prague native has performed well at hockey's highest level, as he garnered 12 points in 33 contests last year, despite averaging a mere 11:25 of ice time.
