SLATE PREVIEW
Postponements are piling up, so there are only four games on the evening slate, including the first Battle of Alberta of the 2020-21 season. The Oilers and the Flames are both high-powered offenses, but the Flames (-120) have the edge in net with Jacob Markstrom.
The Maple Leafs and the Canucks are in a similar situation, as both are high-powered offenses, but the Canucks' defense has been abysmal this year. San Jose and Anaheim have the potential to be high-scoring because of the flakiness of their respective defenses, but neither offense should be considered a major threat.
The Penguins will head to Long Island to face the Islanders and hoping to avoid their fourth loss in five games. Their blue line is still muddled with question marks, but that should create opportunities for the young guns.
GOALIES
Jacob Markstrom, CGY vs. EDM ($8,000): Connor McDavid has been untamable this season, but the Flames' defense is underrated despite ranking 10th in the league with 2.05 xGF/60. There's no doubt McDavid can break this game open, and Markstrom's considered contrarian as a result. However, Markstrom has been superb this year, recording a .920 save percentage and a 4-3-1 record.
Ryan Miller, ANA vs. SJ ($7,600): The Sharks can't get things going on offense, as they sit at 25th in the league with 2.01 xGF/60. Their power play is a putrid 10.3 percent as well. Furthermore, Miller has faced limited action in his age-40 season, but he was sound last year with a .907 save percentage, and even the Ducks should be able to get enough offensive support against Martin Jones to bolster Miller's odds to win.
VALUE PLAYS/ONE-OFFS
J.T. Miller, VAN at TOR ($5,300): Miller's on a tear to start the season, ringing up three goals and 10 assists through 11 games. He's shooting less than last year, but that's on par with the rest of his career. He's still a value at this price range, setting up Bo Horvat and Brock Boeser at even strength and on the power play.
Kailer Yamamoto, EDM at CGY ($4,900): Yamamoto has predictably found his groove at the top level, accruing four goals and as many assists through the first 12 games. He's contributing defensively as well with 19 blocked shots, matching his shot total and setting a career high in the category. That should provide a decent floor for fantasy managers.
Jason Zucker, PIT at NYI ($4,200): Zucker's starting to heat up with three goals, an assist and 10 shots on net over the last four contests. He's beating defenders in many ways, whether it's getting open for Evgeni Malkin or firing a quick wrister on net. The notoriously good Islanders defense has been merely mediocre lately, letting up 2.44 G/60 at even strength -- 17th in the league.
Ryan Getzlaf, ANH vs. SJ ($3,800): Getzlaf is still searching for his first goal, but he's dished out five helpers so far. The 35-year-old's ice time is slipping a bit, but he logs valuable time on the power play. Most of all, it's a favorable matchup, as the Sharks' goaltending woes have carried over from last year, ranking 29th in the league with 3.38 GA/60.
LINE STACKS
Maple Leafs vs. Canucks
John Tavares (C - $6,700), William Nylander (W - $5,500), Wayne Simmonds (W - $2,700)
True to form, the Maple Leafs' second line would be the first line for many NHL teams. Tavares and Nylander are off to a hot start with 23 combined points through 11 games, and even Simmonds has chipped in three goals. All three log time with the man advantage, too, and the Canucks' PK (80.3 percent) is not a material deterrent.
Flames vs. Oilers
Sean Monahan (C - $5,300), Johnny Gaudreau (W - $5,700), Dominik Simon (W - $2,500)
Monahan and Gaudreau have been fantastic this season, racking up eight goals and 19 points -- nine on the power play -- through 10 games. They're positioned excellently tonight, as the Oilers have given up 2.99 G/60 at even strength this year -- the fifth-most in the league. Simon may be moved off this line, so be sure to check back during warmups.
Islanders vs. Islanders
Mathew Barzal (C - $7,200), Anders Lee (W - $6,500), Josh Bailey (W - $3,500)
This line is averaging two points and 7.5 shots on net per game, and Barzal is the anchor with 2.94 xGF/60 thus far. The matchup against the Penguins is quite favorable, as they've given up 2.79 G/60 -- 26th in the league -- and their PK (74.3 percent) is ranked 24th.
DEFENSEMEN
Morgan Rielly, TOR vs. VAN ($5,800): Rielly's a puck-moving machine, and he's put up eight helpers -- four with the man advantage -- through the last five games. We'd like to see his shot volume pick up, but he's a worthy addition to the aforementioned forward stack.
Quinn Hughes, VAN at TOR ($5,400): Hughes leads the league with 15 points through 14 games, seven of which came with the man advantage. He's already one of the most dynamic defensemen in the league at just 21 years old, at least in the offensive zone. And his power-play usage will be beneficial against Toronto's 23rd-ranked PK (75.6 percent).
Rasmus Andersson CGY vs. EDM ($5,200): Andersson's in a bit of a cold spell, but it's not for a lack of opportunity. He's still averaging 21 minutes of ice time per game, including crucial minutes on the top power-play unit. Edmonton's PK has major vulnerabilities, and Andersson has the craftiness to exploit them.
Pierre-Olivier Joseph, PIT at NYI ($3,300): Joseph has fit right in with the Penguins this year, and that has become increasingly necessary due to the state of Pittsburgh's blue line. The 21-year-old has four assists and 12 shots on net through six games, and he operates on the second power-play unit. His ice time should stay high, and the Islanders have an unimpressive 77.8 penalty-kill percentage this year.
