Ullstrom has played in the KHL the past two seasons but only scored five goals in 45 games. He is no longer considered a top prospect in the Islanders organization and there is no guarantee that he would ever play in the NHL again even if he did return to North America.
Ullstrom had four goals and eight points in 29 games for the Isles last season. He didn't do too much to make him stand out as offensive talent, as he was used mostly in checking situations. He will need a strong camp to make the team this year as the Islanders are loaded with checking forwards. Ullstrom, however, does play well in his own zone but won't see many top-six minutes.
Ullstrom's first professional season was somewhat successful as he scored 17 goals and 24 assists in 67 games for Bridgeport of the AHL. Ullstrom has little to no chance of breaking camp with the team this season, but could get a cup of coffee during the season to show what he can do. And what he can do is skate, as he has been known to go end-to-end in the Swedish Elite League.
Ullstrom has played in the Swedish Elite League the past two seasons, scoring six goals in 66 games. He has good size and weight, but has yet to channel that into goal scoring. Right now he's a dime a dozen player with the Isles.
