O'Regan agreed to terms on a one-year deal with KHL club Kunlun Red Star on Monday.
ANALYSIS
O'Regan last played in the NHL back in 2021-22, when he was with the Ducks before spending all of the 2023-24 campaign playing in Sweden. At this point, the 30-year-old center will likely play out his career overseas, eventually retiring having played in 30 NHL contests in which he generated one goal and five assists.

Acquired from the Sharks and reunited with Boston U linemates Evan Rodrigues and Jack Eichel in Buffalo, O'Regan spent much of the 2017-18 season shuttling between the AHL and the NHL. He scored 13 goals and 40 points in 49 games in the AHL for San Jose and Rochester, but notched just four assists in 21 games in the NHL. The 24-year-old was an NCAA standout but projects to be a minor-league journeyman, and his role with the Sabres going forward is not expected to be significant. It's highly unlikely Rodrigues and O'Regan will play alongside Eichel anytime soon as the three players are obviously of vastly different abilities.
Born in Germany, O'Regan has a small stature at 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, but he plays a huge game. The Sharks' 2012 fifth-round (138th overall) draft pick led the AHL's Barracuda with 58 points (23 goals, 35 assists) in 63 games last year and very well could be on the brink of a stable NHL role. He's keeper material with an outside chance of making a big splash in 2017-18.
O’Regan turned in another excellent season for Boston University in 2013-14, though not nearly as impressive as his freshman campaign, when he scored nearly a point per game. Still, the 20-year-old might offer the best puck skills of any player in the organization, and has done well to avoid the reckless play that typically plagues young, undersized centers. It’s unknown when he’ll make the leap to the pros, but he’ll more than likely have to hone his development at AHL Worcester when he does.
