Prout signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with San Jose in July, with the Sharks counting as his third team in as many years. The right-shot defenseman occasionally runs into trouble regarding his conditioning, and his longest contract to date was the entry-level deal he procured with the Blue Jackets in the summer of 2011. Prout supplied the Flames with just one goal and an assist over 20 games in 2018-19, and he'll remain a non-factor in fantasy circles as long as he continues to be stationed on the bottom pair.
The Flames acquired Prout (from the Devils) midway through the 2017-18 campaign and he spent the rest of his season with AHL Stockton. He potted a pair of goals among nine points in those 34 games, which was enough to land him a one-year deal with Calgary during the offseason. Spanning his NHL career, Prout has registered just six goals and 36 points in 242 contests, serving mostly as an agitator rather than a threat on offense. The 28-year-old will likely find himself in AHL Stockton next season, or perhaps as a healthy scratch in Calgary. Either way, his fantasy value will be minimal.
Prout shot up the depth chart and earned a regular shift down the stretch, and his rock-solid play in his own zone was an unheralded part of the Blue Jackets' late-season push for a playoff spot (as well as Sergei Bobrovsky's Vezina-worthy performance). A plus-15 rating in 28 games will be an impossible pace to repeat over a full season, and his offensive upside is limited, but Prout has made himself a key part of the Jackets' future on the blue line.
A stay-at-home depth defenseman, Prout will likely ride the Springfield-Columbus shuttle again this season, splitting his time between the AHL and the NHL. He'll likely be one of the names called should the Jackets' suffer any injuries on the blue line.
