The 20 year old Swede was a first round pick just a few years back and has tons of upside. His only downside is he has had some back problems and unfortunately come at such a young age. If he gets it straightened out he will definitely be playing in the NHL, sooner than later.
Gustafsson, Washington's first-round pick in 2008 was cut Monday and it is unclear whether he will play in AHL Hershey this year or return to Sweden. The kid has great skills, but was not expected to be in any mix for a roster slot this year. Gus has some real work to do to sharpen his game and to prove he can be durable.
Gustafsson played in the Swedish Elite League last season raising his output from the 2006-07 season, tallying 32 points in 33 games. The first round pick has tons of skill, but there are concerns with problems with his back. MRI’s appear to be negative and he has good set-up ability, does not take unnecessary risks, and plays well on both sides of the ice. He will play this coming season in the second best league in Sweden, for Bofors.
