Plante had a strong season with AHL Oklahoma City, keeping him in the mix among Oilers' defensive depth options. He has battled concussions throughout his short career, but he appears to be the Oilers' second defensive call-up option.

Plante is the type of defenseman you call up from the AHL when the need arises. He has played a handful of games for Edmonton in each of the past three seasons and although he has limited offensive ability, he won't hurt you on defense and isn't afraid to drop the gloves if needed. The Oilers extended him a qualifying offer this offseason so he's still in their AHL plans for at least one more season.
Plante is never going to be considered an offensive defenseman and he has proven as such with only one assist in seven NHL games over the past two seasons. He is, however, a large man who could be a physical force in punishing opposing players in front of the net. Skating has been an issue for him in the past, though it's not as much a liability as it once was. As things stand, Plante is currently seventh or eigth on the Oilers' depth chart.
Plante made his NHL debut for the Oilers last season, who didn't, putting up an assist in four games. He is likely ticketed to once again begin the season in the AHL, but should also get a taste of the NHL when defensive help is needed.
Plante was drafted 15th overall by the Oilers in 2007. In his fourth season with Calgary of the WHL, he had eight goals and 45 points in 68 games. He also led the team in playoff scoring with six goals and 15 points in 18 games. Plante will most likely begin the 2009-10 season with Springfield of the AHL.
Last year was a wasted season for Plante as he had to deal with multiple injuries. Plante also felt he wasn't treated well by the WHL last season so where he ends up this season is still in the air, but it certainly won't be in the NHL. Long term projection is a second pair defenseman.
Plante is a huge defenseman with a booming shot. He's very raw at this stage, and needs plenty of time to develop. He'll again play for Calgary of the WHL in 2007-08.
Plante plays a quiet game for a guy who is 6'3" and 225 lbs. He has offensive upside, primarily because he can skate like a small man and handles the puck well. He's not flashy but if he can develop a bit more aggression, he could be a second-pairing defender who QBs the power play.
