Heponiemi signed a one-year contract with EHC Biel of Switzerland's National League on Friday, George Richards of Florida Hockey Now reports.
ANALYSIS
Heponiemi appeared in 25 games over three years during his time in the NHL, scoring twice and adding four assists over that span. He spent most of his time with AHL Charlotte over the last two seasons. Heponiemi had 12 goals and 31 assists in 62 AHL games in 2022-23. The Panthers gave Heponiemi a qualifying offer in June, so they will retain his NHL rights for the time being.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
Heponiemi will make the transition to North American ice after posting 16 goals and 46 points in 50 games for Karpat in Finland last season. Florida's second-round selection in the 2017 draft will likely need some time to adjust to the North American ice, and he'll need to bulk up as well considering he's listed at just 5-foot-10 and 147 pounds. His production in Finland is promising, but the 20-year-old forward will likely require at least one year in the AHL before he's ready to make an impact at the top level.

Projected to play Thursday
LWFlorida Panthers  Foreign
December 15, 2022
Heponiemi, who was called up Thursday, is projected to play in the evening's game against Pittsburgh, according to Jameson Olive of the Panthers' official site.
ANALYSIS
Heponiemi skated on the fourth line during Thursday's practice. Forwards Carter Verhaeghe and Matthew Tkachuk are both dealing with an illness, and might not play against the Penguins. That's on top of Anthony Duclair, Patric Hornqvist, Anton Lundell, Chris Tierney and Colin White all being unavailable Thursday because of injuries. With that many forwards out of action, Heponiemi seems poised to get an opportunity.
