Did you hear that Roenick has an acting role on a television series? This is a clear indication that he is almost ready to hang up the skates and retire. Fact is, Roenick has enjoyed an extremely successful career with 500-plus career goals and nine All-Star appearances. In Chicago, he enjoyed a three-year stretch in which he posted 100+ pts. JR also enjoys hitting the game winning shot, evident from his 13-game winners in '07-08. Everything considered, he is only good for the occasional goal and low budget acting role at this stage in his career.
Roenick will get his 500th goal this season. He managed to scrape together 28 points (11 goals and 17 assists) in 70 games playing with the Phoenix Coyotes. Playing with a much more talented team in San Jose he could end up in the mid-30 point range, and end his career on a high note. The Sharks brought in Roenick for his experience and leadership, and will not be relying on his scoring touch.
Roenick's situation may remind fantasy owners of Teemu Selanne's situation over the last two seasons. Selanne came off a horid year in Colorado and went on to sign a one-year deal in Anaheim, where he burst out in a big way. Roenick was a bust in LA, and is now looking to recapture some of his magic from years past on a team he is familiar with. Coach Wayne Gretzky seems to believe in Roenick's ability and he may find some of his scoring touch, though fantasy owners will have to realize that he is on a team stacked with capable forwards. Draft accordingly.
The outspoken Roenick looks to produce big things in Los Angeles this season and playing on a line with Alex Frolov will probably make that happen. He's going to be looked to as a leader on and off the ice. Which will mean good things for any fantasy team.
