Joe Nieuwendyk: Announces Retirement
CFlorida Panthers
December 6, 2006
Due to chronic back problems, Nieuwendyk was forced to announce his retirement Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The Panthers forward won three Stanley cup titles, and helped Canada win an Olympic Gold medal in 2002. Nieuwendyk was hampered by back issues all season long, missing 14 of the Panthers' first 29 games. The 20-year veteran finished his career with 564 goals and 562 assists in 1,257 games. The retirement decision came to fruition when doctors said that Nieuwendyk's back would not improve.

Health is the key for Nieuwendyk, who proved he still has the ability to put up numbers when he's in the lineup. He will continue to be the Panthers' face-off ace and could be good for 60 points if he plays 65 or more games.
Bringing in this cagey veteran gives the Panthers a sorely needed ace for faceoffs. While Nieuwendyk is entering the twilight of his career, his 22/28/50 in 64 games during the 2003-04 season would have easily finished second in scoring on Florida's team. There's no reason he can't put up 50 points again this year, as long as he stays relatively healthy.
