Dahlen didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Sharks, so he'll become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Dahlen was essentially a regular in San Jose's lineup in 2021-22, picking up 12 goals and 22 points while averaging 13:48 of ice time through 61 contests, so this news comes as a bit of a surprise. The 24-year-old Dahlen shouldn't have much trouble landing a new deal with a different NHL organization as a solid bottom-six option once free agency opens Wednesday.

Finding a permanent abode has been a challenge for Dahlen, a smooth attacking-zone operator known for his slick hands. The 21-year-old has already been traded twice, and his NHL debut remains on hold. Drafted in the second round (42nd overall) by Ottawa in 2016, Dahlen compiled 15 goals and 16 assists between two seasons for AHL Utica before the Sharks scooped him up and relegated him to the AHL, where he proceeded to dial in four assists in seven games as part of the 2018-19 campaign. There will be immense pressure for Dahlen to make a splash at the Shark Tank this year, as his entry-level deal will expire in the summer of 2020. He's worth a speculative stash in deep dynasty leagues, but there are obstacles to be cleared.
Acquired in a trade for Alex Burrows, Dahlen was the best player for Timra in Sweden's second division last season, where he was named MVP after scoring 44 points in as many games. He's a talented two-way winger like father Ulf, but with much more upside on offense. There will be plenty of competition at training camp and there's no need to rush any of their prospects, so it's more likely Dahlen begins his career in North America in the AHL, though the occasional call up shouldn't be ruled out. It's worth mentioning that Dahlen and elite prospect Elias Pettersson used to be teammates, and they'll be reunited in Vancouver.
