Past Fantasy Outlooks

2016
Bellows had three points in eight games for the Islanders last year, as well as 31 points in 52 contests with AHL Bridgeport. In October of 2020, it was revealed Bellows had been disciplined for violating the league's performance enhancing substance policy, and that he had already served his punishment in full. While that shows bad judgement, it doesn't change the fact that Bellows will likely be NHL ready within the next year or so. A physical player, he's a perfect fit for head coach Barry Trotz's blue-collar system, with enough scoring to potentially earn a third-line role. Bellows will have to fend off Michael Dal Colle and Matt Martin for playing time in the near term. If he's unable to do so, the Minnesota native will likely spend another year in the minors.
Bellows has yet to even play in an AHL game, but he remains one of the best prospects in the Islanders organization. Now 20 years old, he amassed 41 goals and 74 points in 56 games with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL last season. The phenom's two-way game was on full display, as he posted an immaculate plus-40 rating at juniors -- that isn't as important as goal scoring to fantasy owners, but young prospects typically don't play regularly in the NHL until they prove they aren't a liability in their own defensive end. Furthermore, he plays a physical style that has seen him average more than one PIM per game in each of his last four seasons. Bellows is still a year or two away from reaching the big stage in a full-time capacity, but he qualifies as a fine stash for those involved in dynasty leagues.
Bellows was the 19th overall pick for the Islanders in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He has NHL bloodlines as his father Brian scored 485 goals during his NHL career. Most compare the son to the father and see a similar player. Bellows has the potential to be a perennial 30-goal scorer but his overall game does need work. What he will give the Isles however is something they seem to be lacking with their other top forward prospects, a bulldozer. Bellows is not afraid to play a physical game as he isn't afraid to play in the corners and along the boards and that may end up being just as important to the Isles as his goal scoring ability. His NHL timetable is at least a year or two away but when he does come up it will likely be on the fourth line where he will have to prove that he deserves to be moved up to a scoring line.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might sign with Leafs
LWFree Agent
January 11, 2024
Bellows, who can play just one more contest on his professional tryout agreement with AHL Toronto before it expires, is in contract negotiations with the Maple Leafs, Joshua Kloke of The Athletic reports Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Bellows has made the most of his time with the Marlies, providing 14 goals and 23 points in 24 AHL games. However, the Maple Leafs already have 47 players under contract with the maximum being 50, and Toronto likely wants to keep some slots free to make maneuvering easier ahead of the March 8 trade deadline. Still, the 25-year-old has demonstrated that he might be an upgrade if deployed in the Maple Leafs' bottom six, so it's entirely plausible Toronto will opt to sign him.
