August 20, 2020
Heed agreed to terms on a contract with HC Lugano (NLA) through Nov. 15.
ANALYSIS
Heed will become an unrestricted free agent once the league season officially ends. His deal with Lugano will allow him to join up with another NHL club ahead of 2020-21 training camps, clearing the way for him to find a new home. The blueliner only logged 38 games with San Jose this year, notching one goal, four assists and 44 shots, so he may not have a lot of suitors.

Heed checks out as a no-frills defenseman with an offensive gear that leads to the occasional box-score blitz. Last year, the Swedish-born skater recorded 13 points -- including three on the power play -- and a plus-9 rating through 37 games, but he was held back by injuries and a two-way contract that enabled the Sharks to park him in the minors at various points of the season. Heed signed a one-year, one-way "prove it" deal in July, and if he can prove he can prove his worth at the top level, there's sleeper appeal knowing No. 72 will be insulated by an offense that averaged 3.52 goals per game in 2018-19 -- tied with Calgary for second in the NHL.
Heed was deployed sparingly by the Sharks in 2017-18, but he was pretty productive when given the chance to play, totaling three goals and 11 points in 29 contests. That said, there's no reason to believe he'll be taking on a more significant role this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if he struggles to crack double-digit points as San Jose's rotational seventh defenseman. Due to his minor role and lack of offensive upside, Heed can safely be ignored in most fantasy formats in 2018-19.
