Pakarinen has signed with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL, Finnish news site Iltalehti reports.
ANALYSIS
Pakarinen, who recently completed his fourth season in the Oilers organization, will look to revitalize his career in what is widely considered to be the second-best league in the world. Once a 20-goal scorer in his native Finland and a reliable offensive player at the AHL level, Pakarinen logged just two goals and a single assist in 40 contests with Edmonton in 2017-18.

A tough winger who isn't afraid to throw his body around, Pakarinen had his 2016-17 campaign cut short by a leg injury suffered in the preseason, which limited him to 19 total games (14 in the NHL). At 26 years old, the Finn is running out of time to establish himself as an NHL regular, and while he earned a one-year contract extension this offseason, he faces an uphill struggle for bottom-six minutes with the Oilers; that may result in him racking up plenty of airline miles between Edmonton and its AHL affiliate in Bakersfield in 2017-18. When in the lineup, he may be a decent source of hits, but that’s about all that fantasy owners can expect of him.
Pakarinen came in third on the Oilers with 152 hits despite playing only 63 games last year, but he provided precious little offense – just 13 points. Toughness is probably the 24-year-old Finn’s key to a roster spot, as he lacks the skill to hang with Edmonton’s top forwards, but knows how to throw his 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame around. He’s still going to be a fantasy afterthought in most formats unless he takes a major step forward offensively; for what it’s worth, Pakarinen’s shown offensive ability at the AHL level, having notched 31 points in 43 games over the last two seasons.
Pakarinen was one of several unheralded AHL call-ups to make his debut with the Oilers last season, as he appeared in 17 games and was able to notch his first NHL goal. Edmonton doesn't seem to have big plans in store for him long-term, so he’ll likely need a rash of injuries before he earns another extended stay at the NHL level.
