Begin announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports.
ANALYSIS
Begin spent the 2012-13 campaign with the Flames, whom he started his career with in 1997-98, scoring eight points in 36 games. He was forced to settle for a minor league contract this offseason and elected to retire with his prospects of returning to the NHL diminishing. Begin finishes his career with 56 goals and 52 assists over parts of 13 seasons with the Flames, Canadiens, Stars, Bruins and Predators.

Begin provided some much-needed veteran leadership in 2012-13 and will need to do even more of that with a young squad in 2013-14. He should make the team to at least counsel the younger players and will compete for a spot on the fourth line. He had eight points in 36 games last season.
Begin slots in as a fourth-liner/role player, essentially replacing Stephane Yelle. Begin is less of a finesse player than Yelle, but what he lacks there, he makes up for with the energy and grit he brings to the table.
Begin's very rarely found himself in any scoring opportunities for the Canadiens last season, and his off-and-on injuries kept him off the ice for much of the season. He is their best defensive forward but has no fantasy value, as he'll always (only) play on the checking line and penalty kill unit.
Begin is the consumate team player and leader, playing with a reckless abandon. This effective disturner will pot the occasional big goal but does not figure prominently on offense. As such Begin's main value is in real terms to his club, not in fantasy terms to potential owners.
Begin is a type A disturber on the ice. He can deliver the open ice hit, kill a penalty, or block a shot. He's an agitator and a team leader. He's just not a guy you'd want on your roto squad.
Steve Begin is a fan favorite in Montreal because of his intensity, his ability to play through pain and his love for mixing it up. He’s a fourth line player at best, but can forecheck effectively if given the ice time. Begin is a player who won’t be a factor on the scoresheet, but can be in terms of momentum swings.
