Past Fantasy Outlooks
Oesterle's usage was way down in his second season in Detroit. He appeared in just 52 of 82 games for the team (two goals, 11 points) and his 15:39 average ice time was his lowest mark in any season in which Oesterle has appeared in at least 43 games. The 31-year-old Michigan native linked up with the Flames in free agency on a one-year, $925K contract. As things stand heading into training camp, Oesterle appears to be competing with Dennis Gilbert for a spot in the Calgary Opening Night lineup.
Oesterle's production slipped back to 13 points in 58 games in 2019-20 just a year after he put up 20 points in 71 outings. The 28-year-old blueliner added 88 blocked shots but also carried a minus-9 rating. Oesterle has topped out as a third-pairing defenseman during his six-year NHL career, although injuries to other players have allowed him to play in larger roles at times. Still, most fantasy managers won't have much need for the defensive specialist outside of deeper formats. He projects for roughly 15 points, 80 shots and 100 blocked shots over a full campaign.
Oesterle notched six goals and 20 points as well as 139 blocked shots in 71 contests with the Coyotes in 2018-19. Seven of his points came with the man advantage, as the blueliner had an unexpectedly strong season. Oesterle's role isn't safe just yet for the Coyotes, as he's likely to play on the third pairing and may still be prone to the occasional visit to the press box in the upcoming season. Factoring in regression, it's more likely that Oesterle will end up closer to 15 points rather than 20-plus, especially if he gets passed on the depth chart.
Oesterle was thrust into a top-pairing role for much of the 2017-18 campaign with the Blackhawks, notching five goals and 15 points while posting a minus-11 rating in 55 contests. Chicago shipped the 26-year-old American -- along with Marian Hossa's contract and Vinnie Hinostroza -- to the Coyotes in July in exchange for a few minor-league pieces, so he'll no longer have the luxury of skating alongside Duncan Keith this season. Instead, he'll likely slot in as the ‘Yotes seventh defenseman, which means he'll struggle to find consistent playing time in 2018-19. Oesterle can safely be ignored in all but the deepest fantasy formats.
Oesterle played in a handful of games with Edmonton last season, but like so many other youngsters on the team, he failed to do much to separate himself from the pack. With at least eight players ahead of him on the organizational depth chart on the blue line, Oesterle will likely be bound for AHL Bakersfield to start the 2015-16 campaign.
