2017 Fantasy Outlook
Grooming local talent has long been a staple in Detroit. In the case of Coreau -- who stuffs the cage with his 6-foot-6, 220-pound frame -- the Northern Michigan University product signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013 and hasn't looked back. This past season, he made 14 appearances with the Wings, rotating with Petr Mrazek when Jimmy Howard sustained injuries to his groin and knee. Coreau's underwhelming ratios (3.46 GAA, .887 save percentage) call for proper context, as he challenged some of the league's top opponents -- including split decisions against the Penguins -- and also recorded a couple shutouts. Coreau also went undefeated at home during the Calder Cup playoffs, helping the minor-league squad to its second championship in franchise history. Looking ahead, with Mrazek and Howard both under contract in 2017-18 and collectively taking up $9.29 million of the team's salary cap, Coreau will likely have to continue biding his time in the minors, but he should be viewed as a value investment if one of Detroit's more established goalies ends up getting bought out or traded.
