Backman made his way to the U.S. in 2013-14, contributing six points to the ten-game playoff run for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. He is in the last year of his entry-level contract, and is hoping to impress in the minors enough for the Red Wings to re-sign him.

Backman is expected to spend another season or two playing in Sweden before heading to North America.
