Kinkaid inked a one-year, minor-league contract with AHL Charlotte on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Kinkaid had started the preseason on a professional tryout deal with the Islanders, but it seems he will be heading south to link up with the Checkers. The fact that the 35-year-old backstop is on a minor-league-only deal means that Kinkaid won't be suiting up in the NHL this season -- unless somebody comes calling with an NHL-level contract.

Kinkaid was signed last summer to serve as the No. 1 goaltender for the Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford, but he ended up spending a significant chunk of the season in New York due to an injury to starter Igor Shesterkin. Kinkaid saw action in five games, posting a 3-2-1 record, 2.59 GAA, .859 save percentage and one shutout. Kinkaid is under contract for one more season and figures to once again return to the Wolf Pack, but a potential trade of scheduled backup Alexandar Georgiev could thrust him into the backup role behind Shesterkin. Kinkaid won't have any fantasy value regardless.
Kinkaid is projected to spend the season on the taxi squad after signing with the Rangers, as he's a distant third behind Igor Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev on the team's goaltending depth chart. The Long Island native has 157 games of NHL experience, primarily as the Devils' backup, but he struggled mightily in limited action with the Canadiens last season, posting a 4.24 GAA and .875 save percentage over six appearances (five starts).
Kinkaid played 41 games for the Devils last season for the second straight year, but he couldn't repeat his 2017-18 performance. While he set a career high with three shutouts, his overall play was lackluster at best, and he eventually lost his spot on the roster following MacKenzie Blackwood's emergence. Dealt to Columbus at the deadline, Kinkaid spent the end of the season in the press box, but after signing a one-year deal with Montreal in the offseason, the 30-year-old will try to revive his career as Carey Price's backup.
Kinkaid led the Devils to the playoffs last season, going 26-10-3 with a 2.77 GAA and .913 save percentage. Those rate stats were right in line with Kinkaid's career numbers as a backup, but he served as the starter in the second half of the season over the ineffective and occasionally injured Cory Schneider. Schneider's $6 million AAV should earn him the first look as the starter in New Jersey's crease this season, though he may not be ready on Opening Day after offseason hip surgery. Kinkaid's numbers won't blow you away, but any continued struggles from Schneider -- whether performance or injury-related -- would open the door for Kinkaid to once again take over as the No. 1 goalie for an expected playoff contender.
For better or worse, Kinkaid will find himself serving as Cory Schneider’s backup in New Jersey for two more years after signing an extension in the offseason. Even in what was Schneider’s worst full campaign ever last year, Kinkaid only saw action in 26 games, starting 23. His career 2.68 GAA and .912 save percentage are good enough to stick in the NHL, but he’s a distant No. 2 in New Jersey.
Kinkaid is locked into the backup job behind Corey Schneider, although he represents a sizeable downgrade in net anytime he’s called upon. The 27-year-old netminder has amassed an uninspiring 2.71 GAA and .909 save percentage while serving as New Jersey’s No. 2 netminder over the past two seasons; he has almost no chance of overtaking Schneider unless injury is involved.
Kinkaid didn’t see much action behind workhorse Cory Schneider last season, but when he did, he was up to the task, posting a respectable 6-5-4 record to accompany his .915 save percentage. Despite having only 20 NHL games under his belt, Kinkaid is the clear-cut backup in New Jersey, and should be perfectly serviceable so long as he's not needed for a long stretch of action in the event of a Schneider injury. Given the fact Schneider played 69 games last season and figures to rank among the league leaders in appearances again, it’s unlikely you would draft Kinkaid in 2015-16, but may represent a worthy streaming choice against some of the dregs of the league.
One of several younger netminders in New Jersey’s system, Kinkaid will battle Scott Clemmensen for the team’s backup role behind Cory Schneider. The young goalie grabbed 24 wins in the AHL last season with a 2.29 goals-against average and should see a handful of starts in the NHL should he secure the team’s No. 2 role.
Kinkaid is one of several goaltenders in the team's system who saw his potential role within the organization change when the Devils acquired Cory Schneider on Draft Day. With Schneider on board, Kinkaid and Scott Wedgewood will be vying for AHL starts and the right to be Schneider's backup in several years time. Kinkaid's numbers in the AHL could have been stronger with a .905 save percentage and a 2.72 goals-against average and will need to improve. Kinkaid saw just 26 minutes of NHL action last season in his call-up.
One of several young netminders in the Devils’ organization vying for the mantle of heir apparent to Martin Brodeur, Kinkaid posted a 17-20-3 record, including three shutouts, with AHL Albany last season. Kinkaid will likely spend 2012-13 in the AHL ... barring any injuries to the Devils’ top duo of Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg. He'll battle Jeff Frazee and possibly Scott Wedgewood for playing time in the minors.
After a strong career at Union College, Kinkaid inked an entry-level deal with New Jersey in April of 2011. Expect him to start the season in the minors with several netminders ahead of him on the depth chart.
