Engqvist is considered a defensive specialist at forward. He has the size to be physical and will use it when provoked, but doesn't seek out that type of game. If he continues to play the defensive game and hones his faceoff skills, that will be his ticket to the NHL. He routinely skated against the top scoring opponents for AHL Hamilton and got time on the penalty-kill unit. With Lars Eller (shoulder) uncertain to start the season, Engqvist would make an ideal replacement given his defensive inclinations.
