Justin Holl

32-Year-Old DefensemanD
Detroit Red Wings
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Holl secured a three-year, $10.2 million contract with Detroit in the summer of 2023, but that's looking like a significant overpayment. He was unable to earn regular minutes with Detroit last season, finishing with five assists, a plus-8 rating, 22 PIM, 39 blocks and 59 hits in 38 contests while averaging 15:05 of ice time. That's in stark contrast to 2022-23 when Holl averaged 20:14 of ice time across 80 regular-season appearances with Toronto. Holl will attempt to rebound this year, but he'll have an uphill battle in his quest to secure a regular role on one of Detroit's three pairings. It's plausible he'll once again spend significant stretches of time as a healthy scratch. Read Past Outlooks

No offense in part-time role
DDetroit Red Wings
November 22, 2024
Holl has gone 10 games without a point and was scratched for the sixth time in that span Thursday versus the Islanders.
ANALYSIS
Holl is in a rotational role on the third pairing, competing with Albert Johansson and Erik Gustafsson for playing time. The 32-year-old Holl has never been one to put up big numbers on offense, topping out at 23 points in 69 games in 2021-22. He has one assist, four shots on net, eight hits, 15 blocked shots and a plus-1 rating over 12 appearances this season.

Holl appeared in a career-high 80 games for Toronto a season ago, posting two goals and 18 points, along with a plus-15 rating and new high-water marks in both hits (151) and blocked shots (139). The Minnesota native was rewarded with a three-year, $10.2 million contract to join the Red Wings in free agency. It's a lot of money for a player than has never tallied more than 23 points in any one season, but the monetary commitment from the club suggests Holl should once again average upwards of 20 minutes per game in 2023-24.
Holl was in the Toronto lineup far more often than not a season ago, playing a career-high 68 games and finishing with three goals and 23 points, numbers right in line with what we have seen from him in prior years. Holl's hit (129) and block (104) totals increased considerably, but not enough for him to make a fantasy impact in either area. Already 30 years old, the chances of Holl taking a step forward offensively seem non-existent, making him a player to avoid in all fantasy formats this coming fall.
On a team filled with offensive stars, Holl has been the steadying defensive presence for Toronto. The 29-year-old Minnesota native has become a staple in the Maple Leafs' lineup the past two seasons, although he has managed just four goals and 38 points in 123 games over that span. To Holl's credit, he's also registered a plus-29 rating during that time frame. From a fantasy perspective, Holl gets no power-play time and figures to post roughly 100 hits and 100 blocks over the course of a full season, reasonable numbers, but nothing exceptional for a defenseman. There's minimal fantasy value here despite the fact Holl has carved out a key role for the Leafs.
Holl made an impact in his first full NHL season, contributing 18 points, 89 hits and 83 blocked shots in 68 contests last year. His ice time steadily increased throughout 2019-20, but with T.J. Brodie now in the fold, Holl might see less usage in 2020-21. At 28 years old, it's taken Holl a while to get to this level of play, but there's a decent chance he pushes for 15 to 20 points in the upcoming campaign. He'll also provide plenty in the way of non-scoring stats, but most fantasy managers can find better scoring production on draft day.
Holl made a splash in his NHL debut with the Leafs in 2017-18, scoring two goals in as many games. Now 26 years old, Holl has turned unspectacular production in the AHL (68 points in 192 games), but he's a right-handed shot on a one-way contract and is all but guaranteed a real shot at a third-line gig with the Buds. He won't deliver fantasy results, though he will be a solid NHL citizen.
Holl was drafted 54th in the 2010 NHL Reentry Draf. Many consider him a smooth skater who will be skating for the University of Minnesota for this season.

Will play once on weekend
DDetroit Red Wings
January 12, 2024
Coach Derek Lalonde said Friday that Holl will get into one game on the weekend, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
ANALYSIS
Detroit faces LA on Saturday and Toronto on Sunday. Holl has been a healthy scratch in each of the Red Wings' last two games. Holl has five assists in 27 games this season, his first with Detroit after six seasons with Toronto. Jeff Petry has been a healthy scratch at times this season and could be the odd-man out when Holl reenters the lineup.
