Biega was recalled from AHL Charlotte on Friday.
ANALYSIS
With James Wisniewski expected to miss the next six months after tearing his ACL in Thursday's tilt against the Predators, Biega was called up to serve as the team's seventh defenseman Saturday against Detroit. The Hurricanes are exploring different options, including trades and potential free agent additions, so the stay may be short lived. Biega registered 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) in 69 games with AHL Charlotte last season.

Biega spent the majority of last season at AHL Charlotte, where he recorded just 14 points in 69 games. In March, he was recalled by the Hurricanes and played in 10 straight games, notching a pair of helpers. A solid two-way defenseman, Biega relies on sound positioning and defensive smarts to make himself effective. He moves the puck quickly and efficiently most of the time, but at 6-foot-0 and 205 pounds, is slightly undersized. In terms of his development, Biega is now being overshadowed by some of the higher-profile blue line prospects in the Canes’ system, such as Michal Jordan, Trevor Carrick, and Haydn Fleury. Expect Biega to once again spend the majority of the upcoming season in the AHL.
Biega is a low ceiling prospect, who will likely start his first full pro season in Charlotte (AHL) this season. Biega had a successful college career at Harvard but without much upside he should be left on waivers.
Biega will continue to man the blue-line for the Harvard Crimson in 2012-2013, having yet to sign his first professional contract after being drafted by Carolina.
Biega’s offensive prowess was on full display with Harvard University in 2010-11, as he lit the lamp 11 times to complement 19 assists in 34 games. To put this into perspective, the brawny defender more than tripled his points output from his freshman campaign the year before. The Hurricanes could use more two-way defenders, but Biega has awhile to go before he’ll make a splash in the NHL.
Biega is committed to Harvard for the 2010-11 season, so the Hurricanes must play the waiting game when it comes to their third round selection of the 2010 Entry Draft. However, Biega has already impressed the parent club in the areas of strength and conditioning. Another year with Harvard should be very beneficial to the Canadian defenseman.
