The luster is beginning to wear off for Gormley, the Coyotes' 2010 first-round draft pick. He's not been able to crack the NHL lineup on a consistent basis yet, and has also seen his performance in the AHL dip; at Portland last season, Gormley only managed 10 points in 23 games. During his 27 games in the NHL, Gormley scored only two goals and chipped in two assists, with none of the points coming in his last 12 games. The opportunity still exists for Gormley to seize a spot in the Coyotes' top three defensive pairings, but in order to do so, he has to pass several players who are ahead of him on the depth chart.

Gormley was the Coyotes' top-ranked defense prospect heading into last season, but seemed to lose that distinction to Connor Murphy by the end of 2013-14, as he only saw action in five games with the big club. He did manage to deliver a strong offensive season at AHL Portland with seven goals and 36 points, but it came with a minus-22 rating. Gormley should be in the mix for a roster spot in camp considering his polished offensive skill set, but he’ll need to step up his work on the back end in order to solidify a job on the team’s third pairing.

Gormley is one of the better blue line prospects in the league and is likely to be one of the first call-ups from the AHL in the event of injuries on the big club. He had 29 points in 68 games in the AHL last season and he'll be valuable in the desert if he can bring that same offensive spark to the Coyotes.

Gormley spent 2011-12 in the QMJHL after being the 13th overall draft pick by the Coyotes in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Yet another piece of the impressive blue line stockpile, Gormley tallied 32 points in 35 games between two clubs last season, finishing with an overall plus-3 rating. Yotes' general manager Don Maloney has said Gormley is the most likely of all the prospects to crack the roster out of training camp this year, but he would be best served with another year of development.

Gormley played in 51 games last season between the QMJHL and AHL, tallying 14 goals and 35 assists before suffering a knee injury. GM Don Maloney expects Gormley, a former first-round pick, to contend for a roster spot with the Coyotes in 2011-12. Gormley brings a nice burst of offense to the ice from the blue line despite finishing last season with a combined minus-17 rating.
