Samuelsson turned pro in 2011-12 after only two seasons at Boston College, a move some questioned. From a fantasy perspective, it's doubtful he'll ever have much of an impact. He totaled 10 points (2G, 6A) in 65 games for AHL Wilkes-Barre last year but made strides with his overall game. The son of all-time Penguins favorite, Ulf Samuelsson, Philip will do well to have a career in the NHL as a defensive defenseman -- even if it doesn't approach the heights his dad reached.
Samuelsson hasn't set the world on fire since the Penguins selected him in the second round of the 2009 draft. He may have turned pro a bit early, but the son of Ulfie registered a goal and eight assists in 46 games for the Baby Pens (AHL) in 2011-12, while also playing five games for Wheeling (ECHL). Samuelsson is just 21-years of age, but, at 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds, the defenseman has plenty of time to take his game to the next level. From a fantasy perspective, he doesn't figure to give owners many reasons to own him.
Samuelsson is expected to begin his professional career in the fall after playing defense for Boston College the last two years. He picked up 30 points and 108 penalty minutes in 81 games at Boston College, where he was part of a team that won an NCAA title in his freshman season. The Penguins are looking for Samuelsson to bring an aggressive, physical style to the table, much the way his father, Ulf, once did for Pittsburgh. Still, he's likely several seasons away from making a significant contribution at the NHL level.
Samuelsson's bloodlines run back through his father, Ulf. Drafted in the second round of the 2009 entry draft, Samuelsson spent 2009-2010 with Boston College. The blueliner collected 14 points (1, 13) in 42 during his freshman season. He'll definitely get a shot in the NHL at some point, but that most likely won't happen for another two or three years.
Samuelsson's selection in the second round of the 2009 draft was viewed as a reach by many. The son of Ulf, Samuelsson played for the Chicago Steel of the USHL in 2008-09 and tallied 22 assists and 60 PIM in 54 games. The defenseman will continue honing his craft and probably won't crack the NHL for at least three or four years.
