Doherty cleared waivers and the Sharks have reassigned him to AHL Worcester.
ANALYSIS
With the Sharks looking to get a little tougher over the offseason and open roster spots on defense, it looked like Doherty had a shot at making the team. He'll be on the short list for a call-up when injuries strike.

As the Sharks did some bulking up during the offseason, they re-signed Doherty, a 6-foot-7, 235-pound defenseman. Doherty is huge presence on the blue line, but isn't likely to find himself on the Sharks' opening night roster, though he could very possibly make his NHL debut this season. As far as fantasy, he'll bring in some penalty minutes, but he doesn't have the offensive upside to compliment the penalty minutes. Through 69 games in the AHL last year, he registered four goals and 11 assists, which is up from his one goal and nine assists through 40 games the season prior. Those numbers aren't terrible, but they don't bode well for his production capabilities on the big stage. Between the lack of points and that he'll likely start with limited minutes if he does get the call up, his fantasy value is limited.
With the 57th overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the Sharks nabbed Doherty, a hulky puck-moving defenseman smooth on his blades. For the past four seasons, the 6-foot-8 man from Cambridge, Ontario has spent time with the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL, a team he captained last season on the way to recording 53 points (14 G, 39 A) and 86 penalty minutes in 68 games. The 20-year-old also appeared in just three games with AHL Worcester last season, but with more professional hockey experience under his belt in the coming years Doherty could evolve into a nice two-way defender in the NHL.
The Sharks secured Doherty's services with a contract this past offseason. He has an imposing frame, which he used to his advantage in three seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL, particularly in the penalty minutes department (372 total PIM). While he most certainly has a future with the Sharks, he likely will not arrive in the big stage of the NHL in 2010-11.
Doherty has registered consecutive 20-point seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. At 6-foot-7, 218-pounds, he is a physical type that will get his share of minutes in the penalty box with not much else to offer.
