Elliott has been a super-hyped prospect for a while now, but has struggled in the AHL over the last few years, albeit there were some injuries that may have been to blame. As a result, last season’s outputs of 14 goals and 14 assists in 61 games with the sub-.500 AHL Lake Erie Monsters were actually a bit of a rebound for the talented defender. At this point, Elliott may be best served learning from coach Patrick Roy in the NHL than from any coach in the AHL. Look for him to receive a chance at establishing himself on the Avs' bottom pairing in 2014-15, but may find himself in the media box part of the year, too. He will likely ascend to full-time duty in 2015-16, so his dynasty value remains solid. But he needs to actually win a job in the Mile High City before he becomes viable in single-year formats.
Elliott is one of the Avs' hot young prospects on the blue line. He played in 18 games for the Avs last season, registering just four points, but also played 44 games in the AHL where he picked up 13 points. He needs development time, so he will really need to impress new head coach Patrick Roy early in camp or at the start of this season if he wants significant playing time at the NHL level. Otherwise, he will continue to hone his craft with heavy ice time in the AHL.
Elliott, who was called up by the Avs in late November, made his presence felt right away with two goals and an assist in his first three games. However, he tailed off considerably after that, registering just eight points in his next 27 games and found himself a healthy scratch from March 10 onward. Elliott still has a ton of offensive potential, having registered 241 points in 281 games over four years at WHL Kelowna, but may still need some seasoning at the AHL level. Fortunately for him, the Avs are starved for a game-breaking, puck-moving defenseman to quarterback their power play, so he will be given every opportunity to earn that role this fall.
Here's one reason the Avalanche felt comfortable trading Kevin Shattenkirk to St. Louis last season. The Avs' second-round pick in the 2009 NHL draft, Elliott was named the WHL’s defenseman of the year on Wednesday after leading all defensemen with 31 goals and 81 points. He is also the first WHL defensman to score at least 30 goals in a season since 2006-07. The Avs will likely give him a very long look at training camp in September, and you never know - he just might stick. If not, he will open the season at AHL Lake Erie.
The Saskatoon Blades (WHL) defenseman tallied a career-high 26 goals and 65 points in 72 games last season, his third full campaign with the club. Elliott is an offensively gifted defenseman who creates scoring chances with his good vision and anticipation. At just 19 years old, he is expected to need at least one season in the AHL before he gets promoted to the big leagues.
Elliott posted some very impressive numbers last season in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades, scoring 55 points (16G 39A) in 71 games. Elliott is an offensively gifted defenseman who can create scoring chances with his excellent passing skills, good vision and anticipation. He is expected to continue to hone his skills in the WHL for another season or two, but he has top-four NHL defenseman written all over him. Those of you in keeper leagues take note.
