Katic will play in Germany next season, according to Newsday.
ANALYSIS
This is a little surprising given the Isles lack of depth on defense. The Isles will extend a qualifying offer in order to keep Katic's North American rights.

Katic played last season in the KHL and will probably do so again this season. The Islanders still hold his NHL rights but there is little chance he will play for them anytime soon.
Katic will play in the KHL this season with Medvescak Zagreb. Katic did play one game in the NHL during the 2010-11 season but other than that has failed to make his mark.
A year after playing in 11 games for the Islanders, a shoulder injury limited Katic to just 14 games at the AHL level this past season. He will more than likely need a very strong camp to have a shot at making the Islanders' roster while proving himself at Bridgeport in order to get a call-up during the season.
Katic played in a handful of games for the Islanders last season but failed to show any of the potential that will place him on the Isles' radar screen to start the season with the team this year. Still, the Islanders have not given up on him, and he is likely to once again see time with the parent club when injuries and roster moves clear some space.
Katic's first season in the AHL ended in February due to shoulder surgery. Katic still needs another season or two in the AHL before the Islanders would even think of calling him up.
Katic put together a string of successful seasons for Sarnia of the OHL. He recorded 150 points over four seasons for the Sting (227 games) and now will test his mettle at Bridgeport in the 2009-10 season.
