Mayer has been plagued by inconsistency throughout his career and has hovered around a 3.00 goals-against average and .900 save percentage. Very pedestrian numbers. He's not sound positionally and takes chances. The Canadiens inked Mayer for another two years, but the 24-year-old is running out of time. He'll return to Hamilton of the AHL, but probably not as the No. 1. Montreal added Dustin Tokarski (from Tampa Bay) late last year and he was the primary goalie during the final stretch of the season.
Mayer was given an opportunity to backup journeyman Curtis Sanford at AHL Hamilton in 2010-11. A good showing would have certainly put him in line as the team's No. 1 this season, but he showed very little in posting a 3.06 GAA and .890 save percentage in 21 games for the Bulldogs. The organization eventually traded for another goalie (Drew Macintyre) and Mayer saw little time in the second half of the season. As expected, the Canadiens organization let Sanford move on, but Mayer will battling to stick with the team as a backup to Nathan Lawson.
Mayer, 19, is a member of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL. In 2007-08, he played in 32 games with Saint John, posted a 16-11-0 record, a 3.77 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage, along with two shutouts.
