Macias did not spend any time in the NHL last season after playing six games with the Avs the year before. Unfortunately, he isn't good enough at either end of the ice to be considered ready for full-time NHL duty at this point. He scored just 17 points (7G, 10A) in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters in 2009-10. Another year in the minors is almost a certainty.
Macias saw six games as an Avalanche last season, recording a single assist. Prior to that, he was putting up decent numbers in the AHL, with 18 points (3G, 15A) in 36 games. However, the Avs' blue line is pretty well-stocked this season, and Macias will likely only be used in the event of an injury. Expect to see him start the season back in the AHL with the Lake Erie Monsters.
Macias is a savvy offensive-minded defenseman who has a nose for the back of the net. He capped a strong four-year run in the WHL with 70 points in 79 games for the Kamloops Blazers in 2006-07. However, he did this by seeing time on both defense and as a right winger. He is a very good and conditioned skater, who possesses good overall skill. He has good hands and is effective moving the puck up ice in most situations. He does need to add some muscle to his 6'2", 180-lb frame. With a strong training camp, he could challenge for a roster spot this season, but don't expect any fantasy production for a few more years at least.
