Mitchell had a fine second season in the Mile High City, netting career-highs in points (32), plus/minus (plus-13), shots on goal (107) and PIM (36), all while assuming a steady role as the Avs' third-line center. Even so, Mitchell won't sniff Colorado's top-six unless there's an injury, nor will he see time on the power-play with any regularity. But he does the little things expected of a solid third-liner -- like killing penalties -- really well. All told, the seventh-year pivot should have a firm grasp on Colorado's third-line center spot yet again, with an outside shot at reaching the 40-point plateau, depending on the performances of linemates like Alex Tanguay, Jamie McGinn and/or the newly-acquired veteran winger, Daniel Briere.
Mitchell is expected to center the Avs' fourth line this upcoming season. He surprised last season with 20 points in 47 games, a tally good for fifth on the team and even more impressive considering the limited amount of ice time he saw at the bottom of the depth chart. Mitchell could be a viable option in deeper leagues if he continues to produce points and grind as a power forward. Otherwise, he will see his ice time squeezed by some of the younger forwards who will begin the season in the minors.
Mitchell will sport a Rangers sweater this season after signing a one-year deal with the club in the summer. Between a knee injury and time spent with AHL Toronto and AHL Hartford/CT, Mitchell found his way into just 23 games in 2010-11. If he's up with the big club this campaign, it will almost assuredly be in a limited checking role.
Mitchell has a great work ethic but his skating and his two-way play aren't so hot. He does show flashes of offensive talent and should stick with the big club this season. He needs to be on scoring line, though - he's just not defensively savvy enough to pull off playing a checking role. He may pot 20 goals some day but it won't be this season. Don't draft.
Mitchell may get a shot with the big club in the next year or so. But his ceiling is limited and that means his fantasy value is virtually non-existent.
