McCollum will battle Petr Mrazek for playing time in Grand Rapids after sporting a 24-12 record and 2.30 goals against average in 2013-14. He has an outside shot at getting a little NHL time, but that won't happen unless Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavsson gets hurt.
McCollum will compete for a spot on the Grand Rapids Griffins, as the goalie spots in Detroit are pretty much set with Jimmy Howard and Jonas Gustavsson.
McCollum will join fellow farmhand Daniel Larsson at Grand Rapids (AHL) this season, where the duo figures to share time now that Howard is the backup netminder in Detroit. Of the Wings' three young goaltenders, McCollum appears to have the highest ceiling and the most polish for his age (19), which suggests that he may emerge as the best long-term internal candidate to man the pipes in Motown once Osgood is out of the picture. McCollum had an outstanding final season in junior hockey with a 34-16-4 record and seven shutouts in 54 starts between Guelph and Brampton of the OHL last season.
The team's first-round pick in 2008, McCollumn is a prospect capable of battling with Jimmy Howard and Daniel Larsson for the goaltender of the future label. He's OHL bound for 2008-09, but could see Grand Rapids as early as 2009-10. At least until one of the Wings' big three goaltending prospects pulls away with the future of the franchise tag, McCollum is definitely worth consideration in keeper leagues.
