Tyler Cuma: Doesn't Get Qualifying Offer From Wild
DMinnesota Wild  Foreign
June 30, 2014
Minnesota will not tender a qualifying offer to Cuma, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2008 first-round draft pick has struggled so far due to injuries and ineffectiveness, and as a result has played just one game for the Wild. Cuma had just eight points -- all assists -- in 55 games for AHL Iowa last year.

Cuma, Minnesota's first-round pick (23rd overall) in 2008, hasn't been able to get his career on track due to frequent injuries, so his prospect star has dimmed. Last season, he had 12 points in 42 games for Houston of the AHL as he missed significant time with a broken foot. He's still seen as a two-way defender, so he has some fantasy upside if he can stay healthy and find a regular role in the NHL.
Cuma, a first-round pick in 2008, is known as a fundamentally sound defenseman, but his young professional career has been plagued by knee injuries. On top of a sprained MCL in his left knee that required surgery early in 2009, Cuma subsequently tore his ACL (same knee) and again went under the knife, putting a question mark on his availability for the start of the 2011-12 season. Assuming he can stay away from the operating room, Cuma should continue developing in the minors while preparing for an NHL job in the coming years.
The 2008 top team prospect, Cuma is the future anchor of the blue line. This physical defenseman (6-foot-2, 192 lbs) was a team leader on the Ottawa 67s (OHL). He’ll give you some points and should make the club in Minnesota any time now.
Two-way defenseman are a commodity in the NHL, and Cuma is one such player. A late first round pick by the Wild in 2008, Cuma could very well end up making the team this season at the age of 19. While his offensive game is still a work in progress, he has shown more offensive skills that many defensemen will ever show, making him a player who could really produce in the future.
Cuma is an intriguing prospect in the junior leagues. Playing for the Ottawa 67's in 2007-08, he compiled 32 points (4G 28A). At 6-foot, 175 lbs, his stature won't intimidate anyone in the NHL, but is likely to use his skating prowess and dexterity for an unparalleled advantage. A keen defenseman who can shoot the rock, Cuma should definitely be able to latch onto the big stage sooner than later.
